The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) has granted California Polytechnic University its Silver Rating through its Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS). More than 800 educational institutions participate in the STARS program, through which the AASHE publicly reports information about participants’ sustainability efforts, particularly in relation to academics, operations, administration, and planning. A transparent rating system, STARS rates universities based on credits earned and allows them to compare themselves to each other on multiple measures.
Dennis Elliot, Cal Poly’s director of energy, utilities, and sustainability, stated that the Silver Rating is remarkable for Cal Poly, which participated in the STARS program for the first time in 2017. The award is a reflection of the university’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.
